March 8th is International Women’s Day, a global celebration to recognise the achievements of women and raise awareness about equality.
We want to take this opportunity to acknowledge and thank the thousands of women employed by Labour Solutions Australia every year. Our company wouldn’t be the success it is today without the committed and hard-working females in our workforce.
Changing history
Blue-collar jobs have always been predominantly filled by males. However, over the past decade there has been a noticeable uptick in the number of females entering these roles. This extends across many male dominated industries including construction, transport, logistics, and agriculture.
Sarah Dimitrijevic, Business Development Manager at Labour Solutions Australia, explains “Our clients no longer view certain roles such as driving a forklift or operating powerful machinery as a ‘man’s job’. There has been a total shift in perception.”
This positive change is paving the way for equality, inclusion, and productivity in the workforce.
The benefits of gender diversity
Women have proven to be valuable assets in blue-collar industries, with many employers acknowledging their outstanding “attention to detail, and reliable work ethic”, Sarah adds.
In terms of workplace health and safety, women generally take less risks than males. In fact, studies show male risk-taking typically increases under stress, while female risk-taking tends to decrease under stress. A measured and adverse reaction to risk taking is advantageous when handling powerful tools or operating dangerous machinery. This can significantly reduce the risk of workplace injury and death, resulting in a safer environment for everyone.
Women are also bringing a fresh point of view and skill set to blue-collar roles. Diversity brings different perspectives, strengths, and problem-solving abilities into a workplace.
