Unemployment Rate January 2015
16 Feb 2015

December surprising unemployment rate drop of 6.1% didn’t last long with the ABS (Australian Bureau of Statistics) announcing a climb in unemployment rate of 6.4% for January. This comes despite market expectations of a continuous drop.

The deterioration of unemployment rate is caused by unemployment falling by 12000 jobs through out January with 28000 Full-time positions being lost slightly off-set by a gain in around 16000 part-time roles.
No change in Australian population actively looking for work, keeps participation rate at a steady 64.8%.

These results support the RBA (Reserve Bank of Australia) recent decision to cut interest rate to 2.25% the first cut in the past 18 months.

This is also backed up by the Australian dollar falling to 76.5 US cents while Australian economy is also being affected by the fall in price of several commodity exports this comes in response to a weakening demand from China.

Unemployment Rate - December 2014
20 Jan 2015

As mentioned in our last update in December, it was agreed amongst most economists that unemployment rate would stabilise at around 6.3%, however the Australian Bureau of Statistics December data released last Thursday, shows Australia's unemployment rate has unexpectedly fallen to 6.1, a drop of .1% from the November'14 result.

Around 34,000 jobs were added, most of them full-time, while part-time jobs suffered a strong fall with 4,100 jobs lost.

Participation rate also showed an increase by 0.1% from 64.7% to 64.8%.

Most economists currently commentating on this agree that the unemployment figures are finally starting to catch up with the lead indicators which show an improvement in the overall Australian labour market.
